Modern day slavery

Last week we heard the disturbing news that a McDonalds in Cambridge employed 16 employees who were victims of “modern day slavery”. As HR professionals there were some key processes not followed, this case is a timely reminder.

Under the Modern Slavery Act 2015, there are specific obligations to help combat modern slavery. This legislation applies to organisations with a turnover of £36 million or more annually. These larger companies are legally required to publish an annual statement detailing the steps they have taken to ensure that modern slavery and human trafficking are not present in their operations or supply chains.

One key step any business can take is during the recruitment process, ensure that the bank account the salary is paid into is in the employee’s name.
